Eye mirroring (ophthalmoscopy)

The eye shadowing (ophthalmoscopy) is a method to investigate the background of eye, so the inner surface of the eyeball. This area is usually not visible from the outside.

The eye background is illuminated eye mirroring, so that the various structures such as retina, Choroid and Fundoscopy, yellow spot, serving blood vessels to see. A doctor can detect pathological changes in this way. The investigation is only possible when there is any clouding of the cornea or the lens and there are no bleeding inside the eye.

Implementation

Shortly before the eye mirroring (ophthalmoscopy), pupil-extending drops in the eye are administered to keep the pupils wide open for the investigation. The investigated sees this slightly blurred and cannot participate until after the effect again on the road.

The Ophthalmoscope can be done directly or indirectly. On the direct eye mirroring an electric Augenspiegel with magnifying glass and built-in lamp (Ophthalmoscope) as close as possible to the eye will be. In the Interior of the eye is illuminated by the pupil. You can zoom in up to 16 the eye background with a magnifying glass. The direct eye shadowing with exact details, however, with this method, only a part of the background of the eye is to recognize.

Indirect eye mirroring uses a magnifying glass and a light source (flashlight or Ophthalmoscope). The magnifying glass is placed about 12 to 14 inches in the eye. The light source lights up to make the eye background visible in the Interior of the eye. She 1.5 – allows up to 6 x magnification of the eye background to consider larger areas of the inner surface of the eyeball.

Areas of application

In addition to diseases of the eye itself, such as a retinal detachment, a macular degeneration or optic damage, also a number of common diseases affect the eye background. These diseases include diabetes mellitus (diabetes), high blood pressure (hypertension) and arteriosclerosis (atherosclerosis). People suffering from such a disease or an eye disease, should be periodically perform an eye mirroring (ophthalmoscopy).

Risks and complications

The eye shadowing (ophthalmoscopy) itself has only a very low risk. The use of pupil-broaden eye drops is usually harmless, can lead in some cases to an increase of pressure up to an attack of glaucoma.

Also, the use on the road and using machinery is not possible after pupil-broaden eye drops within the eye mirroring. You can perform only again these activities after full remits of the eye drops effect.
